Free software: The dissemination campaign in schools

We begin this first round with a few posts dedicated to free software and its dissemination in schools. Educational and practical importance of this campaign we will discuss in depth. But we explain the main point.

What is free software.

try to explain it as simply possible. If you're looking at the project site GNU (another thing to talk about), says:
"The Free software is a matter of freedom, not price. To understand the concept, you should think about the freedom of word and not the free beer [ NdT : the word free in English means that free is free, the problem does not exist in Italian]. "

The need for freedom that led to the free software can not and should not be regarded merely as a practical freedoms: the free distribution of software and the free exchange of ideas have the basis matrices are much more complex, in a reality where the software more and more influence on social mechanisms in its ethical, cultural, economic.
E 'on a social condition that is in fact based on free software: free sharing of knowledge leads to human subjects for improving cooperation and creating a community, as well as prevent the formation of small elites, able to exploit knowledge (IT) for the holding of power.

The term "free software" was coined in the early 80s by programmer Richard M. Stallman . The definition of free software, Stallman is based on Four Principles of Freedom:
  • Freedom 0: the freedom to run a program for any purpose
  • Freedom 1: Freedom, by accessing the source code, study how a program and adapt it to their needs
  • Freedom 2: Freedom of distribute copies of the program to help others (and take all copiatene)
  • Freedom 3: Freedom of improve the program and release improvements to benefit the community A
software, therefore, it is said when it is distributed free with una licenza che rispetti i quattro punti di cui sopra.
